For centuries, their powers have been called upon to seduce lovers and dispel witches, send hidden messages and brew potent elixirs, entice the palate and soothe the mind. Illustrated with enchanting collages by acclaimed artist Ann Field, this delightful tribute to the meaning and magic of herbs offers a contemporary introduction to an age-old tradition. The text draws on botanical, mythological, and historical sources worldwide, from ancient Rome to Victorian England, from Asia to the Americas, presenting profiles of over 50 herbs favored through the ages. Blending fact, folktale, natural history, and original art, The Meaning of Herbs explores the language and lore of nature's most versatile and powerful gifts.

Nice little gift....
By Dianne Foster
Who doesn't like herbs? THE MEANING OF HERBS is not at all about actually growing herbs. So, if your looking for a gardening book try THE COMPLETE BOOK OF HERBS by Lesley Bremness or RODALE'S ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBS.
THE MEANING OF HERBS is filled with fun factoids and trivial tales that may or may not be true. For example, "Early herbalists prescribed oregano to those who 'are given to too much sighing' and enraged bears were believed to calm themselves by chewing on oregano bushes." This may be, but knowing where bears come from and the origin of oregano, I suspect the bears in question discovered the oregano cure quite by accident in someone's cultivated herb patch (probably right over there in the Great Smokies). And of course, some human must have been around to observe and record the enraged bear as he became becalmed by chewing oregano leaves. (Wonder what enraged him to begin with? Could it be he got into the gardener's bee hive and tried to eat oregano flower honey?).
THE MEANING OF HERBS will make a nice party favor, thank-you gift, or a small present for a friend. Filled with somewhat amusing and interesting anectdotes about herbs (and bears) as well as lots of pretty drawings, it's sure to send a warm and positive message.

Not Worth the Tree that Gave it's Life
By R. Burke
This book is not for someone who actually wants to know how an herb has been used in the past, despite the fact that it promises to provide this information in the title. Not organized alphabetically, no glossary, and the information is as incomplete and inaccurate as possible while still using up valuable paper. Most of us know something about the lore of the Mustard Seed and spiritual faith, these authors didn't even mention that, but instead said, "mentioned in the bible," without even one specific reference. The photos and nice binding are the best part, but not even good enough to be clipped for another use. Don't buy this book unless you are looking for a greeting card for someone named Rosemary that doesn't have above a 6th grade education.

Perfect Lil Coffee Table Book!
By Attalie Johnson
So I purchased this book, along with its sister book "The Meaning of Flowers," as I had come across it at a friends home, and found it to be charming. The information it presents isn't necessarily for someone interested in learning about herb gardening, or even which herbs compliment certain foods. As the title mentions, its more centered around myth and folk lore. I purchased it as a coffee table book for guest to peruse, and find cutesy little stories in connection with their favorite herb or flower. With that in mind, you may find it to be nice as well. Happy reading!

Review
Shriver and Atkins Inorganic Chemistry is an excellent undergraduate textbook which allows students to develop their understanding of the principles or inorganic chemistry and their applications in modern research as they work through the book. The layout of the book, the excellent standard of presentation and the use of well chosen worked examples and very useful open ended problems make this an extremely accessible text. Not good enough
By Chris
I know this review will be filed under the listing for the solutions manual, but I'm writing about both the text and the manual and, quite frankly, they share parallel flaws and errors. So here goes...

If there's anything enjoyable about Shriver and Atkins' "Inorganic Chemistry" (5th ed), it's the presentation. Nice organization of material with broad scope and colorful figures. The book itself is relatively lightweight too. It certainly doesn't seem as though this text is a typical undergraduate chemistry book.

Unfortunately, that's a statement that applies as much to this book's flaws as it does its (few) strengths. Atkins' explanations are terse and lean, and his definitions of terms lack the clarity that a first-time student of inorganic chemistry - like myself - so often desperately needs. Examples are plentiful, but their 'solutions' vary between superfluous (and poorly - or even arrogantly - worded) and insufficient, and most end-of-chapter exercises and problems are either unclear in their desired solutions or only tangentially related to the 'skills' (whatever they're supposed to be - the text does very little to build up problem solving skills) presented in each chapter.

Which also brings me to the solutions manual, where one unfortunately finds even more flaws: not just lean explanations, but also plenty of errors and mistaken assumptions that could easily have been resolved had the manual's authors bothered to re-read what they wrote one more time. (For a glaring example, find a copy - don't buy one if you don't have to! - and consult the solution for Exercise 1.2. (The good news: the book's website has a free PDF of solutions to the self-tests and exercises.) Don't panic if you somehow find your arithmetic disagreeing with the authors'; it really should be 102.) I'm starting to suspect that Shriver and/or Atkins deleted whatever this other team had to offer and wrote in the solutions themselves.

Unlike many of the other reviewers who have posted their opinions here, I can't offer any alternative texts for Shriver and Atkins' version. But if you're looking to learn from a good text, look elsewhere.

Repetitive,
By Timothy Hemphill
Pros: Nice pictures, some fun random chemical information. The first few chapters are OK.

Cons: The text is repetitive with no coherent narrative or intellectual structure to most of the chapters. It is painfully boring -- I love chemistry, I even like reading chemistry textbooks, but this book puts me to sleep. The solution manual has many significant errors -- totally unacceptable! For most topics, the intellectual depth is low. There is an enormous amount of detailed information, but a lot of it is uselessly specific, and the few truly useful nuggets of information get lost in the sea of irrelevant information.

Overall, the book is hampered by trying simultaneously to give lots of detail and not going in-depth enough conceptually. So, I end up skimming the chapters and ultimately giving up in disgust. There's probably only 20-30 pages of really good discussion, distributed unevenly throughout the text.

I don't know of a better introductory inorganic book, but it can't get much worse than this.

Worst textbook I have ever used!
By Ashley
As my title describes, I am completely dissatisfied with this book. It it vaguely written. It does not clearly and concisely explain concepts or questions. It is written as if it is NOT an introductory textbook. It assumes you know principles that an introductory student does not know, which contributes to the poor explanations. The practice questions in the book are vague as well. Most of the time, it is difficult to understand what is even being asked and the wording is confusing rather than clear and to the point. There are multiple mistakes in the book and answer key (the answer key has most of the mistakes and explains things with concepts not even described in the book, but I'll save its comments for its own review). I would not recommend this book. I would actually strongly discourage it and recommend "Inorganic Chemistry" by Gary Miessler or Catherine Housecroft.

The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love, by bell hooks

With the courage, honesty, and compassion that have made her one of America's most provocative authorities on modern culture, bell hooks takes on the interior lives of men and answers their most intimate questions about love.

Everyone needs to love and be loved -- even men. In this groundbreaking book, bell hooks gets to the heart of the matter and shows men how to express the emotions that are a fundamental part of who they are -- whatever their age, ethnicity, or cultural persuasion.

Written in response to the author's in-depth discussions with men who were inspired by her trilogy, All About Love, Salvation, and Communion, bell hooks's The Will to Change addresses maleness and masculinity in new and challenging ways. With trademark candor and fierce intelligence, hooks answers the most common concerns of men, such as fear of intimacy and loss of their patriarchal place in society. She believes men can find the way to spiritual unity by getting back in touch with the emotionally open part of themselves. Only through this liberation will they lay claim to the rich and rewarding inner lives that have historically been the exclusive province of women. Men can access these feelings by giving themselves permission to be vulnerable. As they grow more comfortable and start believing that it's okay to feel, to need, and to desire, they will thrive as equal partners in their intimate relationships.

Whether they are straight or gay, black or white, The Will to Change helps men to reclaim the best part of themselves.

From Publishers Weekly
A companion to We Real Cool: Black Men and Masculinity, hooks's 23rd book for adults is a fierce, quirky denunciation of patriarchy and a clarion call to the uncommitted to align themselves with visionary radical feminism. In 12 slim chapters, hooks examines the stages of a man's life, from babyhood through boyhood to the teenage years into manhood. She finds patriarchy plays a role in most socio-sexual ills, as boys and men seek alienating sex as a substitute for the love that often seems, because of demands on families that destroy them or keep them from forming, unavailable to men: "Sex, then, becomes for most men a way of self-solacing. It is not about connecting to someone else but rather releasing their own pain." The men who can lead us out of patriarchal chains are "men of color from poor countries, men who live in exile, men who have been victimized by imperialist male violence"-the Dalai Lama for example. While she calls Will Smith films such as Men in Black and Independence Day tools of the patriarchy, hooks saves her big guns for J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, scornfully exposing them as foisted on us by "rich white American men" and no more than updated version of the British schoolboy books that fueled the fantasies of Victoria's empire. A better book to buy for children, she suggests, might be her own recent Be Bop Buzz. Hooks is always readable, but her takes on mass media here have a retro ring to them.

Changed my life.
By Raiza Lisboa
Growing up in a conservative, religious environment, I was often taught to stay away from feminist books, with the caution that they would poison my mind. Contrary to that advice, I have found nothing more liberating than to read books that validate my experience, and interrupt the silent hatred that has bubbled in my being as a result of witnessing the patriarchy at play.

In The Will to Change, bell hooks isn't spreading concepts of feminism through a binary lens of men vs. women. She claims that believing in a concept of male supremacy is as erroneous as spreading ideas of female supremacy. In order for the feminist movement to progress, we need men. Period. She posits that women need a space to process the experiences of living in a patriarchal society, and that we need a space to acknowledge and expose the feelings that arose and still linger as a result of said experiences. We need to engage in our own healing so we can form alliances with men. Patriarchy has no gender, y'all. We are all victims, and must work together to dismantle it.

A great primer for any man looking to change.
By Christopher L. Halverson
Short review—a great primer for any man looking to change.
Just a touch of back story. As a kid I saw the Old Boys Club antagonize my mom in all kinds of nasty ways, so I decided my way of being a man would be to “do no harm” essentially embrace a sort of neutral passivity… which kinda worked, but I’ve found passivity allows the patriarchy to still hold sway, and I am often still complicit.
So, I’ve been exploring what a healthy assertive masculinity would look like. A friend of mine recommended bell hook’s book “The Will To Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love” saying it is the only book out there addressing Alternative Masculinity.

“The Will To Change” is a broad description of what the Patriarchy does to men—Dr. hooks describes a totalized system, I have to admit I’ve not experienced all the manifestations of patriarchy described, but I’d imagine that just means I’m either lucky or have some blinders.
What follows are a few points made throughout the book:

-Patriarchy does not allow for relationship
Dr. hooks begins with the statement that women fear men, for we are a constant threat of violence to them. She uses an intense example by Barbara Deming, who describes the first time she felt true intimacy with her father, which was when she held his corpse. It was the first time there was no threat of violence in him.
Put simply, Patriarchy involves domination, and love and domination can’t coexist. So, all intimacy within patriarchal culture is pretend intimacy.

-The Patriarchy involves Domination
Men living under the Patriarchy are constantly asking where they are on the social pecking order. There can be no sign of weakness.
Instead of finding self-esteem in a man’s individual identity it is always found in relation to other men. Any sign of weakness is shamed. The question is always “who is on top?” “who is dominating who?”. One of the silly thing men often do is answer questions even if they don’t know the right answer, or were not asked the question—this is because not having the answer causes shame and shows weakness. So, mansplaining, for example, is an attempt to not be shamed.

-“Psychic self-mutilation”
Boys become men when they learn to stop expressing their emotions. This is a horrendous loss, and within the Patriarchy manhood is reaffirmed by learning to only grieve this loss in private. Dr. hooks suggests the anti-social stage of development in boys may in fact be the point at which they learn to stop expressing their emotions.
There are multiple masks men learn to use to hide this grief and other emotions. In general the mask is compartmentalization. This causes men to distrust everyone, after all if they are masking their pain, everyone is lying. Often times boys living in anti-patriachal homes lead a double life at home and at school.
Additionally, Workaholism is a mask that is rewarded and encouraged by pretty much everyone. Work is a place to escape the self. It encourages a sense of separate spheres, men work and make money, women work at home and do the emotional work for men.
Another major mask is sex. The Patriarchy has told men that sex is the only space for intimacy and release of emotions. This causes men to have a constant sense of sexual scarcity, after all they are told sex does the work of all passions, sensualities, and relationships. “All human needs are promised to us by way of sex and sexuality.” It isn’t put in its proper place as “one pleasure among many pleasures.”
Dr. hooks warns women ought not ignore the pain the Patriarchy inflicts upon men, as they too can be socialized into psychic self-mutilation.

-Change is hard
Popular culture props up the Patriarchy, even when it tries to be thoughtful about masculinity. For example, American Beauty, Life as a House, and Monsters Ball all depict men critically reflecting upon their emotional life, and they all end up dead. Who would choose to embrace a practice that he is told will lead to his destruction?
Men are often bought off by the Patriarchy. Dr. hooks describes a gentle quiet feminist man who assumed a macho persona and was rewarded for it. Women were drawn to him, he was noticed publically and professionally, and “his feminism ceased.”
At times mainstream feminism gives men who want to change mixed messages, “Hold onto ideas about strength and providing for others… while dropping your investment in domination and add an investment in emotional growth.”
It’s important to remember that women also enforce patriarchal norms. The following conversation is a norm:
“How do you feel?”
“Like there is something missing, I’m in pain and I think society hates me.”
“Shut-up.”
Similarly, men recovering from substance abuse often have the experience of being told by their partner, “Now that you are sober you no longer need to express your feelings.”
Finally, as long as the Patriarchy is the water in which we swim, men who want to change will be left resource-less. “Men will never receive support from patriarchal culture for their emotional development.”

-But it is worth it
“Anytime a single male dares to transgress patriarchal boundaries in order to love, the lives of women, men, and children are fundamentally changed for the better.”

Great book. bell hooks is one of our most ...
By Ken Roth
Great book. bell hooks is one of our most prominent scholars who makes feminism accessible to everyone, and also demonstrates the benefits of a feminist perspective for everyone, not just women. This is appropriate for both genders, especially men. Her perspective on patriarchy outlines how its continued social organization is detrimental to all of us equally. I found her work revealed pain I couldn't previously have recognized or uncovered.

Required for Class, but would recommend to anybody interested in the topic
By Aubree W.
Not quite a "read on the beach book", but a very easy read for a class-required text. William Corsaro is the leading authority on the sociology of childhood, making this book the foundational text in the field. I'd love a more timeless cover... but the content more than makes up for it. Recommend.

The book did have a good amount of highlighting, but it was very cheap. I just used different colors to know what I highlighted, but overall it's pretty good.

The Construction of Nationhood: Ethnicity, Religion and Nationalism (1996 Wiles Lectures Given at the Queen's University of Belfa), by Adr

This interdisciplinary book straddles the fields of history, politics, religion and sociology, and medieval and modern history. Its importance lies in its contribution to arguments about the meaning and origin of nationalism, ethnicity and nationhood, and in challenging the widely-accepted "modernist" theories of Eric Hobsbawm, Benedict Anderson and others. Its argument incorporates careful analysis of English, Irish, South Slav and African examples, and suggests finally an important contract between Christianity and Islam.

"Hastings writes with great clarity and a welcome freedom from current linguistic fashions in historical scholarship....He has added substantially to the growing body of evidence that the vernacular implantation of Christianity has generally been subversive, rather than supportive, of claims to imperial hegemony." Unique contribution to the study of nationalism
By Edward Bosnar
This book has already been criticized as a blatant promotion of the "primordialist" view of nations and nationalism, i.e. the claim that nations have existed as one of the prime forms of human (self-) identification and organization since time immemorial. Such criticisms are, I think, not entirely on the mark. What Hastings does in this book more than anything else is challenge the incredibly structural/functionalist view that nations and nationalism are simply a by-product of industrialization and the increasingly complex division of labor in human societies-a model constructed and most extensively explained by Ernest Gellner. While useful and interesting, Gellner's model often has to bend and fold historical facts to make them "fit." In fact, Hastings takes Gellner's rigid model and applies it to early medieval England, where shows that according to Gellner's criteria, one can even speak of a nascent English nation in the era of the Venerable Bede and King Alfred. The most important point Hastings makes is to fault the strictly modern view of national development as overly simplistic. Nation formation and national identity are actually long-term historical processes which, although closely tied to industrialization and modernization, were and are not strictly bound to the latter nor always dependent on them. Although I don't necessarily agree with all of Hastings' conclusions, nor even his analytical methods, I think this is a very interesting and useful contribution to the scholarly literature on nationalism.

Group behavior and emotion

Recently, I have been reading about group behavior, why we form groups, and, in general, nationalism/religion, etc. This is a short, well written, and informative treatment of the subject.

Nations and Nationalism Emerged Long Before the Enlightenment. Clergy Unite Peasants and Landlords in National Consciousness
By Jan Peczkis
This book is written to counter the “modernist” interpretation of nations as exemplified by Eric Hobsbawm, Benedict Anderson, and Ernest Geller. The author begins with medieval Europe. However, time and time again, author Adrian Hastings returns to ancient Israel as an example of a nation. (p. 3, 18, 186).

WHAT DO THE TERMS MEAN?

To avoid ambiguity, Hastings defines his terms as follows (p. 3)(direct quotes):

An ethnicity is a group of people with a shared cultural identity and spoken language…

A nation is a far more self-conscious community than an ethnicity. Formed from one or more ethnicities, and normally identified by a literature of its own, it possesses or claim the right to political identity and autonomy as a people, together with the control of specific territory, comparable to that of biblical Israel and of other independent entities in a world thought of as one of nation-states.

A nation-state is a state which identifies itself in terms of one specific nation whose people are not seen simply as “subjects” of the sovereign but as a horizontally bonded society to whom the state in a sense belongs. [See also p. 25].

---------------------------------------End of direct quotes-------------------------------------------------------------------

PEASANTS WERE, OR COULD BE, NATIONALLY CONSCIOUS

Author Adrian Hastings rejects the Marxist argument, as held by Eric Hobsbawm, which would have us believe that peasants would not identify with a “country”, as their chief discontent was with the landlords. Hastings points out that one can be discontented with rulers, yet still identify with the nation. He also points to the crucial role of the clergy in bringing together the peasants and landlords into a sense of shared local, provincial, and national identity. (p. 192).

For examples of national consciousness among pre-literate, enserfed Polish peasants, please click on, and read my detailed review, of The Nation in the Village: The Genesis of Peasant National Identity in Austrian Poland, 1848-1914.

EUROPEAN NATIONS

Perhaps this book is a bit too Anglocentric. Hastings claims to find England a nation and nation-state, in essentially the modern sense, as early as the 10th century. (pp. 4-5. See also p. 56, 207).

Hastings also rejects the notion that Germany and Italy, each having become united into single nations only in the 19th century, are thereby new nations. Thus, already by medieval times, the German people had political consciousness as a single entity (p. 106), and the REGNUM TEUTONICUM meant that the Germans understood themselves as a community of law, custom and kinship before even their identification with the Holy Roman Empire in the fourteenth century. (p. 107). In like manner, an Italian national identity was already recognized in the fifteenth century. (p. 116).

MODERN AFRICAN NATIONS

The author rejects the argument that different tribal or ethnic identities were the products of European colonial rule. (p. 149). In addition, the advent of literacy did not manufacture ethnic identities among the locals. It only made the differences, which were pre-existing, less fluid and more canonical. (p. 157).

Finally, Hastings concludes that, “African nationalism, I am suggesting, has hardly existed except where it has been ethnically based, linguistically held together, and biblically watered.” (p. 163).
