Fantastic Book On Cursive Writing Doesn't Insult the User!

I work with high school girls who have learning disabilities, and one of the greatest challenges is keeping them focused on their work. One class is a two student, self-contained English class in which the students need to learn to remain on-topic. As an incentive and motivation to keep focused, I offered the students the opportunity to learn to write in cursive (they're high school students) and they jumped at the chance because they love my cursive handwriting (I write in calligraphy). If the girls stay focused during 3/4 of the class, they are rewarded by spending the next 1/4 working on their cursive writing. I used my own material until I found this fantastic book in which the girls can work at their own speed. They L-O-V-E this book and do extra work in it at home every night. I give them points for such things as coming to class on time, being fully prepared, having all their materials, etc., and now I have added extra credit points for working on their cursive outside of class hours. THEY LOVE IT!!!! They love this book and they are not insulted because this book does not "talk down" to them. It's straightforward and clear. It's also easy for me to modify the instructions and add extra work that keeps the students engaged and working ahead. They are thrilled because school curriculum has stopped teaching cursive, but THEY SEE THE NEED FOR IT, especially when greeting cards come to the house and they can't read them. This book is well organized, and as I said, doesn't talk down to the adult or young adult student. The style of cursive is easy, though I do have to interpret some of it for the students b/c of their learning disabilities, but once shown how to follow the arrows on the letters, they take it and run! This is a fantastic book from which any young adult to adult can learn cursive writing. As an afterword, my students don't know it yet, but when they are done, they are getting calligraphy pens just like mine for the reward for their initiative in wanting to learn more than the curriculum asks them to learn. Fantastic book, easy to follow, excellent exercises and beautifully formed letters that are easy for the student to trace, copy, and reproduce on their own. I would buy these books again in a heartbeat. My praise goes to the authors of this book for such a well focused book that doesn't insult the user.

Big Kid Approved

This is a good book for teaching and/or learning cursive. It includes directions for which way to write each letter, and gives plenty of room to practice each. My daughter is only 6 but she likes the "teenager" (as she calls it) school book feel of it, because she did not like the little kid presentation of most others we looked at.

I applaud the author for creating an outstanding story that deals with a very difficult subject.

Hannah Both Ways is a story of one high school student who is a victim of cyber-bullying and how she deals with the aftermath of social media bashing and untrue nasty rumors.

I really admired Hannah because even though her world was crumbling, she stayed strong and resilient. The most admirable aspect of Hannah is she never gave up – she realized that this was a temporary problem in her life and did not even contemplate a more permanent solution. I also loved her snarky words, her wittiness, and most of all her social awkwardness. Hannah is a character that I truly liked and rooted for until the very end. Her ritual with the Dewey Decimal System was ingenious and I thought it was a great way for her to have a goal for each day.

Lucas was indeed a God-send that came at the perfect time in Hannah’s life and I was so happy that he had the patience of a saint when it came to dealing with Hannah’s cynical and untrusting ways. These two made the perfect duo and rounded out the story perfectly.

Reading this book took me back to my high school days and reminded me that kids can be cruel and heartless – it seems some things never change. Add the social media outlets and I am beyond thankful that these outlets weren't around in my day. Some kids have no idea how their hateful actions affect others or if they are aware, they flat out just don’t care. This story depicted verbal/written bullying perfectly and I applaud the author for creating an outstanding story that deals with a very difficult subject.

I would absolutely recommend Hannah Both Ways not only to young adults but older ones as well. It’s a great way of bringing cyber-bullying to light and showing a positive outcome to a dismal situation.

Solid Gold!

Move over, Augustus and Hazel Grace. There’s a new book couple on my radar now. Hannah Both Ways is solid gold. No matter your experience in high school, the story will hit home. While I adored Hannah and all of her idiosyncrasies, Lucas was the character who completely stole my heart. He handled life with the skill of an old soul; that is, he was wise beyond his years. Lucas and Hannah shone like stars in the YA couples category. The secondary characters were noteworthy, too. Author Rosie Greenway clearly put her experience as a high school teacher to work in this novel. Her depictions of peer pressure, bullying, and social hierarchy were spot on. Social media spreads rumors like the plague, and Greenway used that to her advantage when building, or rather, tearing down Hannah’s character. I work with children like Lucas every day, and really value the voice Greenway gave him. Rarely do I dole out 5 stars, but this book deserves it! Count me in for Greenway’s next book. It can’t come too soon. I received this book as part of a book tour; opinions shared are mine.

You'll love Hannah Both Ways.

Imagine being in highschool and the subject of a Twitter prank gone horribly wrong. Imagine being ostracized as a result. How would you cope with being shunned? Would you trust the new hot guy who seemly see through your hurt and snark? Would you give him a chance? Is he being genuine or just another bully?

These are the questions asked and answered in Rosie Greenway's debut novel. Hannah Both Ways is a cautionary tale, a romance, and a coming of age book. It will capture you from the first sentence.. Greenway has created a strong, feisty, resilient lead character. You'll be mad about Hannah, and mad for Hannah.

Greenway knows her way around prose, witty dialogue and teenage angst. She's destined to become one of the greats in the YA genre. This is a must read for anyonw who loves the well written.

Filip Chereches-Tosa is a web developer and entrepreneur, with a strong belief in the future of web-based software and open source. Don't buy if you don't know XML

This book is very well written but you will find it exquisitely frustrating if you are unfamiliar with XML. I am an embedded systems programmer new to web technology but I am pretty familiar with PHP and Javascript. The lack of XML knowledge made this book a total waste of time for me. It is amazing and stupefying why the author would arrogantly presume that his readers would know XML when he is already presuming that they will know HTML. The net effect of this is, for almost EVERY example in the book he uses some XML so if you do not know XML then you will not understand what is going on. My search for a simple and elementary book that basically teaches you how to weave PHP+HTML+AJAX goes on. This is a disease that Application programmers have. They are used to dealing with everything in an abstract manner ALL the time so they totally forget at what level of clarity their readership is. This is one of the reasons that Bruce Eckel's 'Thinking in C++' and 'Thinking in Java' became best sellers. He was able to bring clarity to the object oriented paradigm in a simple manner because he started from scratch. Any author who claims his book is about helping you design web aplications and in the first 5 pages assumes you know XML deserves very little respect if you ask me.

I wish there was more on the capabilities of PHP.

First off I'm fairly new to web programming (Javascript and PHP) but I didn't find much to broaden my knowledge with this book. Ajax Javascript is covered extremely well elsewhere ("Pragmatic Ajax", "Ajax in Action" and "Ajax Design Patterns" for instance) and is PHP programming ("PHP and MySQL Web Development" and "Advanced PHP Programming").
The book is not complete enough to serve as an introduction to Javascript or PHP. It really doesn't seem to cover the issues with distributed asynchronous programming either.
There is a huge need for a book that concentrates on building solid asynchronous servers with PHP. For instance how can state be carried from server call to server call (PHP session management?). What happens if multiple XML requests are sent while a PHP script is running? Can a single instance handle multiple requests without restarting from the beginning? How can a long running PHP program (yes you need to change the server time out) handle streams of data to and from Javascript?
My suggestions for the next edition are:
1) More on server side patterns (PHP) for AJAX
2) Session management
3) remote RPC techniques
4) JSON servers (techniques like phpolait?)
5) Talk through the code examples more.
I found the code in the book to be the hardest to read through and at the same time the most boring of any programming book I've ever read.

A great intro to popular web-based programming tools

A technical book is only useful if it appropriate for your current skills and knowledge. I am a system admin who has written a fair amount of C++ code and lots of Perl and other scripts. I now need to develop a simple web app from scratch, and this book was perfect for me. While I have many issues with the PHP language, the popularity of LAMP solutions makes PHP a necessary evil that will be around for some time.

This book is a great intro to AJAX as well as PHP, XML, CSS and the DOM. The book is laid out and progresses very well, assuming virtually no knowledge in the first three chapters and with many sidebar comments that answer anticipated questions. The code examples are explained well and give you some good, functional examples to play with and learn from.

They also do well by giving brief intros to important concepts such as DOM and CSS, but then provide links to good on-line resources rather than getting bogged down in these details. Why reinvent the wheel? If you start getting lost following the code that introduces one of these new concepts, just stop reading and peruse the sites they reference.

If you truly new to these concepts, I would recommend reading the first 3 chapters closely and not at your computer, except to refer to the websites they mention. Then go back and re-read them while creating and playing with the code they provide. This helped me a great deal.

Unreadable

I hate to do this but it only deserves a 2 out of 5. Why, I hear you ask. Because it's unreadable. For example, there is no table of contents to give you any clue as to where the book is headed. There is also something about the writing that just makes you put it down for a very long time after each 5 page chapter.

I'm a voracious reader especially of business books on entrepreneurship. But this is just unreadable. After having it for close to a year, I have only read about a third of the 44 chapters.

About the Author
David Andrews is Professor of Chemical Physics at the University of East Anglia, where he leads a theory group conducting wide-ranging research on fundamental photonics, fluorescence and energy transport, nonlinear optics and optomechanical forces. He has 250 research papers and ten other books to his name, and he is a regularly invited speaker at international meetings. In North America and Europe he has organized and chaired numerous international conferences on nanoscience and technology. Andrews is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Institute of Physics, and the SPIE - the international society for optics and photonics. In his spare time he enjoys relaxing with family and friends; he also is a keen painter of the British landscape. His other interests generally centre on music, art and graphics, and writing.

Greg Scholes is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Chemistry. His present research focuses on elucidating the principles deciding electronic structure, optical properties, and photophysics of nanoscale systems by combining synthesis, theory, and ultrafast laser spectroscopy. Recent awards honoring his research achievements include election to the Academy of Sciences, Royal Society of Canada in 2009, the 2007 Royal Society of Canada Rutherford Medal in Chemistry, a 2007 NSERC Steacie Fellowship, the 2006 Canadian Society of Chemistry Keith Laidler Award, and an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (2005–2006). Dr. Scholes serves as a Senior Editor for the Journal of Physical Chemistry and Associate Editor for the Journal of Nanophotonics. Scholes enjoys basketball, hiking, photography, family and friends.

Gary Wiederrecht is the Group Leader of the Nanophotonics Group in the Center for Nanoscale Materials at Argonne National Laboratory. His research interests center on the photochemistry and photophysics of nanoparticles and periodic assemblies, hybrid nanostructures, photochemical energy conversion, and non-linear optical responses resulting from photoinduced charge separation. His experimental expertise is in the areas of ultrafast optical spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy, including near-field scanning optical microscopy. He has received an R&D100 award, the Department of Energy Young Scientist Award, and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. He has authored or co-authored approximately 80 peer-reviewed research articles, and works collaboratively with scientists around the world. He enjoys traveling, nature, and spending time with his family.
