The leading anthology of writings of the modern period, Modern Philosophy provides the key works of seven major philosophers, along with a rich selection of associated texts by other leading thinkers of the period, chosen to deepen the reader's understanding of modern philosophy and its relationship to the natural sciences. Building on the strengths of the first edition, the second edition of Modern Philosophy is enhanced by the addition of the following selections: Montaigne, Apology for Raymond Sebond, "The Senses Are Inadequate”; Newton, Principia, "General Scholium," and Optics, "Query 31”; Hume, Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, Parts 1-5 and 9-12; Reid, Inquiry Into Human Mind, Conclusion, andEssays on the Intellectual Powers of Man,"Of Judgment,"chap. 2, Of Common Sense

Review
What is the ideal text for the professors and students of modern philosophy classes? I can discern at least five essential criteria: it is one that is inexpensive; it contains up-to-date, accurate, and easily readable translations; where possible, it also contains clear, concise summaries of the material to aid in the absorption of the material; it contains engaging biographic that helps situate the thinker within a context and explain his motivations; and, finally, it contains all of the works necessary to teach the class, and more, if necessary, to further explain the context. I know of no English-language modern philosophy collection that better meets these criteria than the Ariew and Watkins anthology.
It is significantly less expensive than any of its other most likely competitors. . . . The selections are outstanding. What the other anthologies seem to forget is that, until the mid-eighteenth century, physics was natural philosophy, and so the writings of Boyle, Newton, and Galileo are equally deserving of inclusion within a philosophical anthology from the early modern period. This is not lost on Ariew and Watkins.
[W]hile collections like Baird and Kaufmann are comparable in breadth, none of them can quite match Ariew and Watkins due to their inclusion of the natural philosophers. Add to that the inclusion, in this second addition, of more works by Newton, Berkeley, Hume, and Reid. and the superiority of Ariew's and Watkins's choices for this selection becomes all the more evident.
The highlights of this collection are the text summaries. . . . [They] range from extremely helpful to, without hyperbole, breathtaking. For instance, the description of Descartes' Meditations as a diptych was enough to make me want to reread this classic.
I applaud Ariew and Watkins on their second edition of this text, and for improving on what is already the industry standard for modern philosophy textbooks. They have done an excellent job of holding on to the kinds of things that worked so well in the first edition, while building on a very strong collection.--Joshua Wretzel, Department of Philosophy, Binghamton University

Modern Philosophy -- full of writings from philosophers such as Locke, Kant or Spinoza -- can be seen as a daunting period of philosophy. I read this book as a text for a modern philosophy class, and found that it is a very competant editing of these difficult texts. The anthology begins with "premodern" writings of Galileo and others, goes through Descartes (with a selection of criticisms of Decartes' work from his contemporaries), and then goes through the work of other modern philosophers such as Locke, Berkeley, Spinoza, Libeniz, Kant, and others. The editor does a wonderful job arranging texts to illustrate the back and forth dialog and critisms among the philosophers. In addition to the selection of texts, there are wonderful notes scattered throughout the text to help alleviate much of the confusion that can arise after reading some of the quite lengthly writings of some (many! ) modern philosophers. Perhaps on an aesthetic (non-content) sidenote -- the book itself is excellent. When I was reading a section, I did not have to worry about pages flipping on me, because the binding is very flexible. In addition highlighters don't bleed through the page -- a wonderful plus to a great anthology! I would highly recommend it.

Great Resource:

I found Ariew's anthology of modern philosophical texts to be very helpful. The compliation of various philosophers is concise and well put together. One thing I would comment on is the binding of the book, I wish the book was made in such a way that it was easier to preserve. However, the content included does justice to the beauty of modern philosophy (albeit some major texts from Spinoza's Ethics were excluded). It is a fantastic read that includes major actors in modern philosophy whos ideas acted more as stimuli to the major philosophers of the era-thus Bacon, Galileo, and Newton affecting philosophers such as Descartes Hobbes, Leibniz, Hume and Kant. I would suggest this as a beginners anthology to those interested in the history and development of philosophy in the modern era.

Comprehensive and inexpensive anthology
By R W Cupp
I used this anthology in the late 1990's for a course I was teaching in the history of modern philosophy. I will be teaching the same course in the Spring of 2009 and I will be using the same textbook. It is comprehensive. And students will appreciate the fact that it is relatively inexpensive. Hackett does it again!
