Review
"I like the idea of a more inclusive sociological theory text. It’s good to see the work of women and people of color integrated into this book….As we move beyond telling the story of a fairly homogeneous academic elite, we also begin to make social theory and theorizing more accessible to our increasingly diverse students."
(Robert E. L. Roberts)Put simply, although the theory instructor has the paramount responsibility of acquainting her students with major perspectives/concepts, the academic figures responsible for constructing them and the intellectual and social conditions under which they theorized, she needs a good deal of help. Adams and Sydie’s Sociological Theory is one of those books that provide such prop―a good one for that.

sociology

Wonderful, wonderful text. A sociology overview in one book. Yes, many theorists are left out, but some really good ones are included. Read Veblen. He is a real eye-opener.

The worst textbook I have ever used.
By Karla
In the Preface, the authors write, "A central goal of this text is be as concise as possible while also doing justice to a wide variety of theorists" (page xxvi). Unfortunately, the authors have utterly failed to achieve this goal.
It would make sense to provide excerpts of each theorists' writing, in addition to commentary and criticism on their work. Rather than providing excerpts of each theorists' writing, the writers instead chose to include a random mishmash of quotes from each theorist with little to no context. The result is a very clunky, nearly incoherent writing style that makes it difficult for the reader to follow. Having read the original works of most of the theorists presented in this text, I can say with certainty that it is far easier to read and understand the original works themselves than it is to read this textbook's atrocious paraphrasing.
Furthermore, this textbook's bias is questionable at times. For example, the textbook calls Talcott Parsons a "notoriously poor writer" following a paragraph complaining about the lack of emotion in his work (page 348), and coupled with a complaint concerning the complexity of Parsons' writing style. While the authors are certainly entitled to their own opinions, the complaints and bias are inappropriate in a book that strives to be a concise summary and celebrate diversity.

its kept well bt with some highlights.
but the price is much lower than a brand new.
anyway, its a good book for someone who really wants to study sociology.
