A beautifully written page-turner

I could guess from the opening paragraph of this novel that the main character, Paris Jablonski, was about to suffer a major blow to her world. It only took a few pages to learn what the blow is.
Going through some old boxes in the wardrobe, Paris discovers a sheaf of love letters between her French husband and a woman known only as Madeline. The letters are recent. It's their wedding anniversary. And all the family are in the house.
Paris now has a problem she must now confront and resolve, however many painful new discoveries that leads to.
Paris is a social worker in San Diego, the same field and city as the author, Reina Menasche. This gives the following chapters a stamp of authority, as Menasche shows Jablonski's world. Menasche describes the settings and people in this novel vividly and beautifully. I could visualise the locations, the characters, their clothing, and their facial expressions. I could feel with Paris, as she wondered who else knew. ("The wife is always the last to know.")And a midst the turmoil, there are razor-sharp stabs of humor.
I downloaded this novel on a Saturday, read until midnight, and finished it the next day. And I'm a 50+ male who doesn't normally read Romance.
This is a superbly crafted book.

A great read!

At last, a heroine women can believe in! Paris Jablonski feels like a sister, and we want to see her get through her marital crisis and find happiness. We watch as she encounters the painful truth about her marriage to her adored French husband, and decides whether to try to save it, or launch herself into a risky new relationship--just when she thought she'd never want one again! I loved the story and loved Paris. Now, I'd love to read the sequel to Twice Begun!

Well written, great read!

The main character accidentally uncovers a secret truth which threatens the very foundation of her family. She is a strong woman who strives to find answers, no matter the cost. This book was thoroughly believable and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it to everyone!

I have read other books on hypnosis and practiced it for a few years. This is a slow yawn with a wannbe erotic method. I downloaded for a break but just couldn't appreciate it like some have.

but with the crappy conversion that was done

The issue is not with the book itself, but with the crappy conversion that was done, from print to ebook. This book is clearly suppose to come with an audio CD and the author routinely makes references to italicized words/phases but nothing is italicized.
The book itself is a fun read and is a nice beginner's book for hypnosis in general or sexual hypnosis specifically. It is by no means the end of the journey into this erotic art.

Definitely a "gateway" read...

Someone else may rate this lower or higher, depending on their familiarity with hypnosis/erotic hypnosis, but we found it an very interesting place to start. It will definitely get the inquisitive mind digging. One thing we enjoyed, and this may seem simple, there is an audio download by the same name (included in the purchase I believe...I may have purchased it separately though) which is a sort of open-ended induction, very useful for a couple who's just getting into this. My wife even says she prefers Mrs. Friesen's voice to most of the hypnotists in this genre, male and female alike.

As a cynic, it doesn't get the 5th star for lack of the scientific evidence my left-brained Self typically requires...but then again, that's just where I sit.

Overall...if you're new to this sort of thing, if you're into bedroom experimentation, if you have a willing and open partner...its worth the cash.

About the Author
HELEN LEFKOWITZ HOROWITZ (Ph.D., Harvard University) is Sydenham Clark Parsons Professor in American Studies at Smith College. Her work in American history has explored cultural philanthropy, higher education, the American landscape, and sexuality. She has received fellowships at the Radcliffe Institute and was a Mellon Fellow at the American Antiquarian Society. Professor Horowitz is the author of The Power and Passion of M. Carey Thomas (1994), Alma Mater (1993), Culture and the City (1989), Campus Life (1988), and Rereading Sex(2002), which was the winner of the OAH Merle Curti Prize and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in history and for the Francis Parkman Prize.

I had to read this book for a U.S. History class. This was a very interesting book. You learn many fun facts about the sexual life in the 1800s. I bought it used and it arrived in very good condition just like new!

About the Author
Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

Quaint, insightful, and disturbing

I found this interesting because I've read Wells' most popular fiction novels and wanted to sample some of his social commentary, and because I've been collecting writings by famous futurists of the last century. Readers who are not similarly motivated may rate this book lower than I did. It's very different from his fiction, so if you liked "War of the Worlds" or "The Time Machine" or "The Shape of Things to Come" it doesn't necessarily follow that you will like this.
The author's attempt to predict the social and technological developments of the 20th century from the vantage point of 1901 can be entertaining for both its hits and misses. For example, in his chapter on armed conflict, he correctly envisions long-range, highly accurate sniper rifles wielded by expert marksmen, but incorrectly guesses that these marksmen will maneuver through battlefields on bicycles. Also, writing two years before the first Wright brothers flight, he estimates that the first practical airplane will be demonstrated around 1950. His description of an aerial dogfight between dirigibles and his disbelief in the viability of submarines seem quaint.
Wells was a product of 19th century England, so sometimes quaintness gives way to offensiveness from the perspective of the modern reader. Today, Wells would be considered racist and sexist. He also supported eugenics and euthanasia, including practices that have been widely discredited since the horrors of Nazism.
Wells was also a socialist who distrusted both monarchies and democracies, believing that the global society of 2000 should be a New Republic that constituted a world state (or close to it) dominated by three or four languages. It would be led by an elite cadre of scientists, engineers, and medical doctors - a technocracy, as we'd call it today.
Despite many inaccurate predictions, Wells did have some interesting insights on things like the growth of cities, the proliferation of labor-saving devices, the problems of the education system, and the evolution of journalism. For those who are comfortable with the writing style of the time (very long sentences and paragraphs; protracted sidebar discussions in lengthy footnotes), this is an intriguing historical sample of both social commentary and futurism.

Nostradamus ain't got nothing on HG

Around the turn of the century, 1901 a famous Sci-fi writer that is well known for predicting the future applies his trade. Instead of taking the word of experts on HG, we get his speculations first hand.

The book starts out innocuously describing how turning a "steam pump" on its side we now have a steam engine. He makes some good points against the wisdom of the time that ideas come together at just the right time to create just the right answer to a problem. From her he speculates on how mechanized transportation will change society. HG is just warming up as he now speculates on government, military and social conscience. He used a term "the new republic to describe his future world.

I may have to take his work on many of the subject but I can relate to his military references. It took the Vietnam War to shake the military up enough to make HG's speculation on an educated well-oiled military that we have today. It was the generals of the time the generals of the Vietnam era that realize that we needed just about everything HG predicted from technical advances to intelligent soldiers to the concept of "Land, Sea, Air" warfare.

Some of his speculations are a met strange or maybe just a tad different. It looks like he thinks that democracy will be exchange for the rule of technocrats. Moreover, he is not too sure of the future domination of the English language.

In any event, this book is well worth reading as it is the core of HG's views of humankind.

Not everyone desires to keep climbing the ladder. Some prefer to be individual contributors with deep expertise. After awhile, they can hit a rut especially those working in professional services. I've been a fan of Alexander's work since discovering several of his professional services series. His writing style is conversational with a scoop of humor added. And that style carries over in this book. Often, I find advice related to professional services to be stiff, boring and difficult to follow and implement. Alexander breaks it down into actionable steps so you can put it to work and grow as a services professional.
