Andre Gerard Smith II, known by many as Dre, is a native of Plymouth, a rural, family oriented town near the Atlantic Coast of North Carolina. He attended Plymouth High School where he was an honor student, and served as an active member of various clubs and organizations. Immediately after, he furthered his education at East Carolina University and in 2008, relocated to Raleigh, NC, where he began a professional career. In his free time, Andre enjoys spending time with family and close friends, traveling, reading, and writing.

Very well-written and heartfelt story

It's not often that such a serious subject as sexual abuse can be tackled in a fictional tale and be done with dignity and grace, while also entertaining the reader with a good story. This is exactly what author A.L. Smith accomplishes with her novel, "Behind Closed Doors". A story of three sisters, Sierra, Alex and Latrice, who suffered greatly while growing up at the hands of a family member. They go their separate ways, only to reunite and find a great resolution for all involved. A very engaging story that pulled at my heartstrings and definitely kept me turning pages. Looking forward to reading part two of this series. Well done.

Great revamp to Book 1! Kudos A.L. Smith!

Great read! I love how A.L. Smith revamped this story to incorporate one of the characters from book 2. I also love the updated ending of the book. This story line is real life as things like this gets swept under the rug and the victims suffer in silence because molestation by a family member goes ignored or the victim is blamed or called fast or loose. The molestation stopped at generation 4 due to one of the victims in this generation putting an end to it before her own child was affected. A.L. Smith kudos to you on the revamp! I enjoyed this book as good as the first version of this book....Keep on writing as you have a wonderful gift that keeps me turning the pages. Patiently waiting on Book 3 to see how this series continues...If I could give a 10 or more stars I would definitely do so. Great job by a wonderful author! Keep on writing as this is definitely your calling!

It's no fun when your life is turned inside out.

This was my first read by this author and I was awe struck at how talented she is and how raw and heart filled this story was. This story had me revisiting my own story and rooting for the ladies as they sought some kind of relief. This is truly a story that should be read by anyone who has suffered trauma or incest. Even if you haven't it is still a good story. Kudos, to a great author who is well on her way.

365 Bedtime Stories

Several people have commented on the content of many stories not being suitable for small children, and I agree with that. Some of the stories are wonderful, some are gruesome, and some are dull. Overall I do not recommend this book. Additionally, the stories are of an inconsistent length making it difficult as "bedtime" reading book. Some are long, and some are less than a paragraph. This can be frustrating for both the child and the parent. Then there are the "variations" which are included as a story for the day but normally are not stories. They simply tell how the tale differs in different areas. To be blunt these variations are exceedingly boring.

Not appropriate for small children

I'm sorry I didn't see the review from "A reader from USA , August 9, 1998", but I agree with the assessment. I purchased this book to read to my 5 year old daughter. I began to read a couple aloud, but found I needed to seriously edit them, or stop reading entirely. Now, I preview each story before I begin - and I find I'm skipping most of them. For example, the first story I selected told the disturbing tale of a bird that helps an abandoned dog find food and rest only to watch him get run over and killed. The bird then seeks revenge on the driver and succeeds in having him killed.

Comprehensive in scope, not quite enough detail.

This book is very impressive in scope, and (as other reviewers have said) IS indispensable for any Drosophila laboratory. It is a very valuable addition to every Drosophila laboratory. The book covers virtually every area of Drosophila work. Many of the topics discussed are cutting edge, such as the chapter on RNA interference, targeted cell ablation, and biochemical preparations from Drosophila (such as soluble nuclear extracts and membrane proteins). Overall I am very pleased with the book, and glad I bought it! One section of the book I find particularly useful is the beginners guide to the Drosophila genome project. This section overviews the information available from the recently completed Drosophila genome project. It tell us what kinds of information are available about the fly genome, how this information was collected, and where we can download it from the internet (complete with internet web site addresses)!
My only criticism of the book is a criticism which applies to ALL manuals published by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press: the protocols are too superficial, and not dealt with in sufficient detail to allow a novice to carry out these techniques (which is what a manual ideally SHOULD do). This has been true of all the CSHLP manuals I have seen. Conspicuously absent from the CSHL publications is a TROUBLESHOOTING section, which can be referred to if the researcher runs into problems. As we all know, there are many small (and seemingly trivial) details to any protocol which, if not carried out properly, can make or break an experiment. Some steps in a protocol are always more fastidious than others, and it is critical for us to know which steps can be done with a bucket and which steps require an eyedropper.
For my money, the best and most comprehensive manual is the CURRENT PROTOCOLS IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY manual (Wiley and Sons), which is updated regularly, and has extensive troubleshooting sections attached to each protocol. (They have recently come out with a companion manual dealing exclusively with protein techniques.) Also, I highly recommend the METHODS IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY series (Humana Press) for its concise protocols and supplementary troubleshooting sections. If the researcher is familiar with the techniques the troubleshooting sections need not be consulted, but if the researcher is a novice the troubleshooting sections are invaluable. Unfortunately a Drosophila manual is not available from either of these publishers, but this CSHL manual makes a good substitute. I recommend this book for all Drosophilists!

This latest edition by Sullivan et al. is the best protocols manual for Drosophila that I've seen. It should be a staple for any fly lab. It provides the most up-to-date protocols for common techniques (ie staining, dissections, cytology) as well as more recent additions (i.e. DNA microarrays, neuroactive drugs, GFP reporters). Moreover, the protocols are clear, detailed, and easy to follow.

Many of the topics discussed are cutting edge, such as the chapter on RNA interference, targeted cell ablation, and biochemical preparations from Drosophila (such as soluble nuclear extracts and membrane proteins). Overall I am very pleased with the book, and glad I bought it! One section of the book I find particularly useful is the beginners guide to the Drosophila genome project. This section overviews the information available from the recently completed Drosophila genome project. It tell us what kinds of information are available about the fly genome, how this information was collected, and where we can download it from the internet (complete with internet web site addresses)!
My only criticism of the book is a criticism which applies to ALL manuals published by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press: the protocols are too superficial, and not dealt with in sufficient detail to allow a novice to carry out these techniques (which is what a manual ideally SHOULD do). This has been true of all the CSHLP manuals I have seen. Conspicuously absent from the CSHL publications is a TROUBLESHOOTING section, which can be referred to if the researcher runs into problems. As we all know, there are many small (and seemingly trivial) details to any protocol which, if not carried out properly, can make or break an experiment. Some steps in a protocol are always more fastidious than others, and it is critical for us to know which steps can be done with a bucket and which steps require an eyedropper.
For my money, the best and most comprehensive manual is the CURRENT PROTOCOLS IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY manual (Wiley and Sons), which is updated regularly, and has extensive troubleshooting sections attached to each protocol. (They have recently come out with a companion manual dealing exclusively with protein techniques.) Also, I highly recommend the METHODS IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY series (Humana Press) for its concise protocols and supplementary troubleshooting sections. If the researcher is familiar with the techniques the troubleshooting sections need not be consulted, but if the researcher is a novice the troubleshooting sections are invaluable. Unfortunately a Drosophila manual is not available from either of these publishers, but this CSHL manual makes a good substitute. I recommend this book for all Drosophilists!

This book is an overview of the career of the FBI man who nearly single-handedly created the system for personality profiling of violent offenders. If there's a big-time multiple murderer from about 1950 until now who hasn't been interviewed by Robert Ressler, he probably refused the honor. Indispensable reading for serial killer mavens, and better written than John Douglas and Mark Olshaker's Mindhunter, this book is packed with fascinating details from dozens of cases: The killer John Joubert, for example, started his life of cruelty as a kid one day when he was riding his bike with a sharpened pencil in his hand. He rode up next to a little girl who was walking, and stabbed her in the back with the pencil. Ouch!

The success of Silence of the Lambs has readers fascinated with serial killers. "New applicants to the FBI's Behavioral Sciences Unit are taking Jodie Foster's character as a role model," notes Ressler, who was consulted for the movie but felt it should have been more realistic. The book is an informative and insightful account of Ressler's 30-year FBI career and the development of the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program. Ressler's numerous interviews with convicted killers (e.g., David Berkowitz, Ted Bundy), use of behavioral sciences principles, and many years of detective experience have given him an uncanny ability to "read" a crime scene and develop a criminal profile of the offender. His involvement in multiple serial killer investigations gives the reader an insider's view into police work. This book is an entertaining alternative to Eric W. Hickey's Serial Murderers and Their Victims ( Wadsworth, 1991) and Joel Norris's Serial Killers (Doubleday, 1988). Recommended for general readers and true crime collections. Wow incredible read! A must read for true crime enthusiasts!

I LOVED this book! I've always been a true crime buff. Each book I read about particular cases about killers leaves me wanting....why? How can someone take the life of another with no more remorse or thought than tossing a used tissue in the trash? How can these monsters walk among us, date our daughters or suckle at our breasts without our knowledge? This book helped me to glimpse into the mind of a few killers thanks to Ressler. Thanks to him I didn't have to view these cold soulless eyes or get my hands dirty. We owe much to Ressler's amazing mind, his initiative and I dare say his amazing wife and children. He's dedicated his life to do this dirty work so that we don't have to. I'm sure there are many who are still alive and safe due to his work. I'm certainly going to thank God that he's around! I am grateful to have been able to understand a little better the kind of monsters who live among us and why they do what they do. Robert Ressler is a true American hero. Anyone who reads true crime MUST read this book! It will give an insight and a better understanding of the whys we so earnestly search for in these horrific cases. Thanks Ressler you are appreciated!

For Fans of Monster Fighters

Ever see the TV series, "Criminal Minds"? Robert Ressler, author of this book, is the model for Agent Rossi: the guy who essentially invented criminal profiling and created the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit. The basic premise is that he has interviewed well-known serial killers and spree killers in prison, and has studied them in every way possible under the circumstances, including studying the case files. Ressler writes about all sorts of killers and rapists and kidnappers, including Richard Chase, the vampire/cannibal whose case I worked on when I worked in the Office of the California Attorney General back in the 1970s. Also most of the famous killers who made headlines during much of the end of the last century (this was published in 1992).If you are fascinated by the people who fight monsters on our behalf, this book will fascinate you as much as it did me. If, on the other hand, your fascination is with the killers themselves, I'm afraid this book will disappoint you.

I loved this book

This was a truly fascinating read. Between the insider's view of the fledgling BSU finding its early feet and the horrific yet humanizing view of serial killers (Jeffrey Dahmer chain-smoked through his two days of interviews), this book is a must-read for anyone fascinated with true crime OR philosophy. Although there are times when it was truly stomach-turning (and I say that as a lifelong reader of Stephen King, Clive Barker, Robert McCammon, Anne Rice and other horror staples) it was also an expose on the realities of profiling and the toll that hunting such killers takes on law enforcement.
As a fan of Thomas Harris and the tv show Hannibal, I loved this book; it and Ressler's entire career were the seeds that Harris used to create some of his beloved and deeply-flawed characters.
Ressler also brought up salient points concerning the death penalty and serial killers; not just the philosophical question of its morality, but the fiscal cost and research opportunities lost. When a person speaks who has studied death and its makers for such a long time, the words really ring out. I cannot imagine what this man's life must have been, and how he was able to maintain any sense of normalcy.
I recommend this book, but with the caveat that it WILL upset even the most hardened reader!
