About the Author
Professor Colin Baker is Pro Vice Chancellor at Bangor University and holds a Personal Chair of the University of Wales. He is the author of a wide range of books with Multilingual Matters, including a companion volume to this book entitled Bilingual Education: an Introductory Reader co-edited with Ofelia García. His research specific interests are in language planning and bilingual education. The previous editions of this book have sold over 70,000 copies with translations into Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Latvian, Georgian, Greek, Vietnamese and Mandarin. He edits/co-edits three Multilingual Matters Book Series and is Editor of the International Journal of Bilingualism and Bilingual Education.

I bought the paper edition some time ago and I really enjoyed it. I have had to refer to it many a time which is why I bought the electronic version, (Kindle) so it would be easier to access and refer to. It has really helped.

A classically-trained illustrator and compulsive sketcher, Bennett Klein has been designing and illustrating for over 30 years. His preference for fanciful black and white drawings is a natural fit for the adult colouring world.

25 Beautiful Hand-drawn Grayscale Sketch Designs – printed on one side of the page

[[VIDEOID:af7ee71bcb5b5b4f144aa1dabf120085]]This is an absolutely beautiful book of grayscale sketches. I'm fairly new to this way of coloring and as soon as I saw this book, I had to have it. I had never heard of Bennett Klein before but I will certainly be following him from this point on. The designs are beautiful and unusual, especially in grayscale where so many of the coloring books available are merely photographs instead of hand-drawn sketches.

The designs are all flowing and almost lyrical in their composition. Women make up a lot of the designs, with unusual hairstyles and poses. There are animals and cultural symbols as well as some fairly hippie-vibe young women. It's just a great combination of unusual designs that will be a blast to color.

I will go into detail about the book below for those who are interested; however, here is an overview of what I found:

25 Hand-drawn sketches in grayscale
Designs are printed on one side of non-perforated paper
Glue Binding
Easy to open to flat position for coloring
Designs do not merge into the binding
Alcohol and water-based markers bleed through the page
Gel pens leave shadows of color on the back of page
Coloring pencils work great with this paper

The designs are printed on thin, white, non-perforated paper. The back of the page is printed with the Colour My Sketchbook emblem. The binding is glued rather than sewn. The designs do not merge into the binding. If you choose to remove a page from the book, you will have to cut it out but will not lose any portion of the design. I could easily get the book to lay in flat position for coloring.

I test my coloring books with various medium even though I generally use coloring pencils for grayscale. I will list the mediums I used for testing in the comments section of this review. Here is what my tests showed:

Alcohol and water-based markers all bled through the page. Gel pens and India ink pens left easily discernible color shadows on the back of the page. Coloring pencils worked very well with this paper. The soft lead pencils went on thick and blended easily. The hard lead pencils left dents on the back of the page.

I usually use soft lead pencils for grayscale projects. That is what I did with my first project. I used Prismacolor Premier Soft core pencils in usual grayscale order (light on first, dark second, and medium tones last for blending.) I found that I preferred a more ethereal look for the ballerina, so I went over the whole design with lighter pencils, especially 10% cool gray. It muted the entire design and gave me the look I was hoping for.

Best adult coloring book EVER

The Color My Sketchbook is the first adult coloring book that will get all images colored. A lot of the coloring books you buy today have a lot of filler stuff in them that will never get colored but I WILL end up coloring all of the images in this book. Pretty much the best adult coloring book ever!!! xoxo thanks Bennett Klein

Wonderful, unique and fun!

This book is great! I don't buy many coloring books, but I'm very glad I found this one. I would say it is my favorite. The artwork is unique and well-done, and fun/interesting to do - I use Prismacolor pencils. I can't speak to the use of markers/bleeding, but the paper is lovely for pencils. The images are far enough out that the binding does not present any issues. I don't consider myself to be a coloring book addict, but I am expecting Mr. Klein's second book any day and can't wait.

I love the suede-like cover material, once everything is colored, it would be a great coffee-table conversation maker.

Putting the Human in Big Data

This book really accomplishes what is quite a difficult task: to find a way to connect the inherently nebulous intellectual concept of big data and connect it to real stories and real examples of how it is impacting our lives.

After reading this, there is no doubt in my mind that Big Data is the defining movement of this generation. It's not just the individual stories, but the collection that brings about this realization. It really makes you see the data angle in so many things around us.

If you are a data scientist, you should feel pretty good about your employability over the next 50 years. And if you're not, it certainly won't hurt to understand this numeric underbelly that exists all around us.

The perfect gift for the geek in your life

I was dubious when I heard about this project. As a geek, I knew what "big data" was all about, and have found myself bemused by all of the attention it's been getting lately. I couldn't see how the idea could be translated into a big coffee table book.

Then I got the book, and spent 2 days reading through it. Wow! The pictures were great -- each one seemed to have been hand-crafted to support the story next to it. Those stories were also good: concise, crisp, with just enough detail to let me know whether I wanted to learn more. In several cases I did, using the book as a starting off point to some online surfing and follow up on my own.

As one of the other reviewers pointed out, the book does have a few pages of ads from the main sponsor EMC. So what? I've followed EMC for years, and I still learned a lot about their business from these ads. It's increasingly expensive to do these kinds of books, so I'm happy to put up for with "ad-infographics" if it means the book can be a bit cheaper. Plus, now I have an easier time convincing my wife why I'm so bullish about EMC's stock. :)

Best of all, I now have the PERFECT gift for the other geeks I know. We sit in front of our computer screens all day, and often tend to bore our non-geek friends with stories about what we do. What I like best about this book is that now I have a bunch of really cool stories to pass along to my non-geek friends -- as a geek, I appreciate and "get" the very real computer science underneath; as a cocktail party attendee, I can re-tell very cool stories about why "Big Data" is so important.

Bottom line: Perfect Valentine's gift for the geeks you love.

Interesting and thought provoking

Read it once through and found it posed thoughts I had not considered, yet still left questions in my own mind when reflecting on my religious beliefs and the things I have been taught from an early age. There was a lot of value and things to ponder and reflect on and that is why I will reread a second time and share with my husband and adult children. Many of the basic principals we practice already, but there is a depth to the writing that proposes deeper thought and discussion.

"It Can't Happen" Happens All the Time

Years ago my wife was looking through the books at a Goodwill store, and for a gag gift for my birthday she bought me a volume of poems by Rod McKuen, whose work I do not like. Helen brought it home and was going to wrap it when she looked inside. There was a dedication in the book signed by the author himself: “To Rob - May you always sleep warm. --Rod McKuen.” Now I have a volume of McKuen’s poetry I cannot throw away, but more to the point, how is it possible that completely by chance that she should pick up such a book bearing a dedication to someone of the same name? It just does not seem that such a thing could happen. It’s the sort of story told many times in _The Improbability Principle: Why Coincidences, Miracles, and Rare Events Happen Every Day_ (Scientific American / Farrar, Straus and Giroux) by mathematician David Hand. Hand knows that it is tough to write about mathematics for the layman, perhaps even more so for probability which he says “is renowned for its counterintuitive nature, more than any other area of mathematics. Even the most eminent mathematicians have been tripped up by it.” Yet there are few equations here, there are many astounding stories, and many of Hand’s explanations are drawn from tossing a humble die.

The book starts with its main contradiction, only a seeming contradiction and one of many explained away within these pages: How is it possible that extremely unlikely things happen, and not only happen, but happen over and over? Hand gives satisfying answers, but besides being a book about extraordinarily improbable events, this is also a book that explains probability in general. Take the law of inevitability: Something has to happen. In a lottery, each possible ticket has so tiny a chance of winning that you might think it a miracle if yours is the one chosen. But what _is_ certain is that some ticket will be picked to win (or if not, the stakes will be raised for the next draw when there will be a winner). It is thus dead certain that an improbable event will occur. There’s the law of truly large numbers: if there are enough possible opportunities, any outrageously unlikely event can happen. If you toss a coin enough times, and have a near-eternity to do so, you will get a run of a hundred heads; it simply has to happen. These are understood strictly with probability theory, but we have also to supplement our “understanding” of rare events by human foibles. The law of selection, for instance, says that you can make probabilities as high as you like, in retrospect. It’s like shooting arrows into the side of a barn and then painting bullseyes around each one. All of us are liable, too, to confirmation bias; we notice events that reinforce what we wish to believe and we disregard data that does not fit. Prophets and astrologers harness this tendency all the time. And sometimes we use bad equipment for our research. Federal law has specific and strict rules for every die thrown in a casino, but dice you get in a Monopoly set are far from such strict engineering and they have bias; research into psychokinesis, the ability to control die tosses, has been criticized because it used ordinary dice.

Readers of Hand’s book will have a happy tour of many aspects of probability, delivered by a guide who is knowledgeable and funny. Even if some of the math gets by you, the astonishing stories are sure to impress you, like the ones about people who have won the lottery more than once. Spare a little sympathy, however, for Maureen Wilcox, who in 1980 bought lottery tickets in both the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. She picked all the right numbers, too. Except the numbers she picked for Rhode Island won in Massachusetts, and vice versa.

Dull as it gets

I've read a lot of books on statistics, both texts for work and more casual books for entertainment value. This is among the worst that I have read.

The examples are dull, recycled, and mostly uninteresting. The concepts seem too basic for the length of the book. And in the end it just is not interesting. Pass on this one.

When I read one star reviews, I often wish the reviewers would tell me what they did enjoy, so that I could calibrate their review and, potentially, so that I could find something better. So here I'll do that. Here are two books of similar nature, both of which are far better than The Improbability Principle:
1, The Drunkard's Walk, by Leonard Mlodinow
2, Fooled by Randomness, by Nassim Taleb

Perception versus Reality: An Excellent Overview

This is a book on statistics but without the mathematical details. The author explains the occurrence of events that one would expect to be extremely rare but, do in fact occur more frequently that anticipated. The author’s “improbably principle”, which is at the heart of this book, is composed of several strands: the law of inevitability, the law of truly large numbers, the law of selection, the law of the probability lever and the law of near enough. These laws are each carefully explained by the author and several useful examples are presented to illustrate each one.

No formulas are used in this book. To be honest, I found that a bit disappointing being an avid mathematics enthusiast. However, it seems clear that the author’s objective is to drive his point home in the simplest and most widely accessible way possible. And in this he succeeds admirably.

The author, a professor of mathematics with specialization in statistics, writes very clearly in a friendly, engaging and often lively style. Because if its wide accessibility, I believe that this book can be enjoyed by any interested readers, no matter what their background. Science and mathematics enthusiasts, like me, although possibly disappointed by the lack of mathematical minutiae, should still be in for a treat. I enjoyed this book immensely.

Worth it

When i read the first book of this series i loved it! This book was no different. i really enjoyed it. The storyline stayed fresh and the characters continued to develop. It was worth the money if you liked the first book. For me the series is a beath of fresh air and i would definetely reccomend them.

This is a great series

Although it is a teen series, it got me hooked wondering what would happen next. It reminds me a bit of XMen where the gifted are sequestered at a school for special kids. There is a bit of romance, and lots of "What is going to happen next?". Good easy read.

I liked this book a lot!

Kassia seems to be enjoying her life at Glendale Institute a few weeks after the happening of the last book. But when someone comes to visit her on visiting day, she discover a part of her life that was kept a secret from her. Kassia has a brother and the reason of his visit is to ask for her helo in finding their parents. Kassia has a tough time dealing with the idea that she has a brother and that her parents don’t hat he but gave her up so she wouldn’t hurt her baby brother and even her own parents, and that they knew she was special. While dealing with all her confusing feelings and hoe to deal with a younger brother, Mira and Daxton get kidnapped and now Kassia has a lot mora than just her parents life in her hands, and a few more secrets to solve about herself.
