A Waste of Money

I was so upset, a absolute waste of money. Extremely uncreative lessons a kindergardener could come up with. The slides are O.K. but not worth $60. And there are very few (maybe 5) handouts. Awful!!! It is also an unreturnable item (which I was unaware of before I purchased it). Hume's book of lists I found extremely helpful but what was she thinking with this one.

I loved this book. I was asked to teach art from an academic perspective (as opposed to craftsy) while living in Eritrea (east Africa). This book was so great from an historical point of view. I had a very culturally mixed group of students and they and I both enjoyed and benefited from this book. I had to leave the book there as part of classroom supplies but plan to purchase another copy.

I loved this book I used it for years in my special eduction secondary ft class. We made wonderful use of the stories and project especially Egyptian and Greek periods the g-ds. I don't understand the negative reviews. I have been teaching for 45 years

About Richard Hofstadter's Social Darwinism in American Thought

For sure, you will realize how social Darwinism is alive and well today and, I offer, that you will be howling to leave it by the wayside by the time you've turned the last page of this unexpected history. This is a cornerstone read for the history buff and a must read for anyone seeking reasons why life--for most of us--is not as joyful or pleasant as it could be...In this light Richard Hofstdter's book is a teacher of both the mind and heart!

A Culture Coming To Terms With Evolution

This book doesn't really take much of a position. Rather, it is a historical chronicle positions others have taken. But if there is a hidden 'thesis' to this book, my guess is that it would look something like this: Evolution is a unique science because it touches on the very idea of who humans are, individually and as a group. Becuase of this, there has been a great urge to make sweeping proclomations applying evolution to politics, ethics, economics, etc. This book is the historical record of various attempts.

What one learns in this book is that far from being limited to Spencer and the laissez-faire crowd, evolution has been invoked to support just about every governmental and economic scheme imaginable: Kropotkin tied 'mutual aid' to anarchism; Marx applied it to communism; Spencer to capitalism; Dewey to government interventionism, etc....etc....

Hofstadter takes us on a ride that begins with Darwin and winds its way through these varied schemes. Everyone, it seems, wanted to apply this newly found science to their side before the other guy could monopolize it! If you couldn't link your beliefs to evolutionary support, then your beliefs may risk seeming unscientific (especially if the other guy COULD claim evolutionary support). And this is the story of that multifarious race.

Obviously Spencer and Sumner are written about quite a bit, as they have become the public face of 'Social darwinim." (As it is a bastard philosophy, I refuse to capitalise the "d" in Social darwinism.) Kropotkin and those who tied evolution to altruism are also gone over a good deal. From there, we get a survey of the often neglected pragmatists and their understanding of Darwinism (I think they got it right; particuluarly William James.) We end in somewhat of an irony, with the anti-Spencerian economists who applied evolutionary thought to the OPPOSITE conclusion from Spencer's.

It is a good read, especially for those interested in the history of ideas. But anyone looking for much of a thesis in this book will be disappointed. The book is not pro- or anti-evolution in any way whatever. The book only suggested (to me anway) the danger that comes when evolutionary thinkers unhinge themselves from the empirical and begin philosophizing about normative things like ethics and politics. Evolutionary psychology is one thing, but evolutionary ideology is quite another (in whatever shape it comes).

About the Author
Kirk VanGelder started teaching automotive technology to college students at Clark College in 1983, and then high school students at the Clark County Skills Center in 1990. While he wasn't a natural teacher when he started, he worked hard and kept trying new things. Over time, he has had success engaging students through the use of intense questioning and discussion. This has helped his students learn how to think critically, as well as learn how to ask questions of themselves, and then to search out the answers.

In his search for engaging teaching materials, Kirk stumbled across the CDX videos in the mid 90's. After spending several years raising money to buy the materials, a laptop computer, and a LCD projector to use them on, he was off on a journey that ultimately led to working with CDX and other instructors to author his first textbook; Fundamentals of Automotive Technology: Principles and Practice and a second book Fundamentals of Maintenance and Light Repair. Kirk is appreciative of the many instructors who contributed to the textbooks or reviewed them as they was being written and edited.

Kirk grew up in Washington State, and still resides there with his wife of 27 years, and their 13 children. Kirk's passion is helping instructors improve their teaching/coaching skills. He continues to look forward to working with auto and diesel instructors across the US and Canada.

Full disclosure, I am a rep for the publisher. Please note, the "Access Code" with the book provides access to student supplements, including: MP3 audio files, glossary, case studies, etc. It does not provide access to CDX's online Light Vehicle program.

If you buy a used book, you may not have access to the MP3 audio files and other supplements, if the access code has been redeemed. Also, the online program is only available at your college bookstore. Very often it is less expensive to buy the bookstore bundle (book and online access pack) vs. buying the components separately. Also, if you find an online access pack for sale online, you are at risk of purchasing access to an older version that no longer exists.

This book provides a great overview of an M&A deal. There is a lot of information on finding a deal, valuation of the deal, financing the deal, due diligence, closing and post merger integration. ANOTHER WINNER FROM AMEND!

To me, Foxtrot continues to be the most underrated comic strip going today. It has been the most consistently funny strip since Calvin & Hobbes as Jason Fox continues to be the funniest, most unpredictable kid in comics today. The latest Foxtrot Collection features strips culled from Orlando Bloom has Ruined Everything, My Dog Went Out Can I Have Another, and How Come I'm Always Luigi? Cartoonist Bill Amend keeps setting the bar higher and higher.

Jason is at his all-time best in this strip with several new quick-money schemes including making his own computer animated films and producing his own Christmas cards. Along the way he finds plenty of time to annoy sister Paige, especially with his pet Iganua Quincy. The sequence on the release of "Return of the King" is absolutely hilarious as Jason becomes upset when Paige looks forward to the film even more than he does...only because she wants to look at Orlando Bloom!

Peter has his usual failings in sports and on tests while he tries to eat everything in sight. Peter gets a job at a movie theater wearing a Garfield the cat costume to promote the film and becomes the subject of taunts from little kids.

Paige does her usual to avoid school work and try to get a boyfriend, all the while having to be constantly on guard against Jason's schemes to embarrass her, and usually failing. There's a great Halloween series where Paige and a friend get trapped a nerd's Halloween party.

In all the humor, there is one introspective moment when the family visits Washington DC and they see the Viet Nam memorial wall which was genuinely touching. But it's soon back to business as Jason tries to buy the Apollo 11 capsule and gets his dad in trouble with the Secret Service.

From beginning to end Jam-Packed Foxtrot is a first rate collection!

The regular good stuff

Of course it gets five stars. You like Foxtrot, and you get the Foxtrot humor. If you like the comic, you'll love the book. Mine was brand new and perfect condition (as promised by amazon) and came at expected date.

FINALLY!!!!!

It seems as though I had been waiting for this Treasury for such a long time.

Its finally here and its wonderful. Over 150 pages of both black and white and color strips - taken from previous books (and of course the comic pages in the paper).

The whole family is back and they are as hilarious as always.

Nice, large big size. Comics are easy to read and the pictures are great. Wonderful mixture of Jason and al.

Buy this one!!!!

My wife bought this book to cram for an SAP CRM update having done earlier revision implementations. She is a very senior SAP Business Analyst and says this book is very easy to understand and apply. Better than most.
