About the Author
Guy Spier has run the Aquamarine Fund for 17 years, achieving an impressive record of market-beating returns. An ardent disciple of Warren Buffett, Guy launched the fund with $15 million in assets, closely replicating the approach of Buffett’s original partnerships. Guy was educated at Oxford University, where he was a tutorial partner of the current British Prime Minister David Cameron and came top of his class in economics. Interesting book, but not quite what I expected

I am a retired financial advisor, and a long time value investor. When I ordered this book, I expected the author to share some ideas that would enhance my understanding of value investing. I guess I should have read the product description of the book posted on Amazon. That would have clued me in to the fact that this book is more of a memoir of the life and personal growth of a fallen Master of the Universe.
It was a quick read, and I enjoyed read of some of the life lessons Spier learned on his transformative quest for wealth. I have shared this book with 2 of my sons, just starting out in their careers. Spier offers some good advice that I wish I had learned early in my career. I believe my sons can learn a lot from this book, if only they'd put down their damn smart phones and pick up a book!

They may not achieve Buffett-status but they stand a good chance of beating 90% of professional investors after fees

I will definitely read this book again, slowly, considering all the life changes I want to make.

This is the most honest and open account of an investor coming of age I have come across. It deals directly with a lot of the in-the-weeds difficulties of staying disciplined, setting up the factors that will prevent known psychological traps and investing boldly as a contrarian. Spier has an extremely insightful perspective on what has led to Buffett's investing prowess. In moulding himself after the legendary investor he shows how it's possible for anyone to similarly set the odds up in their favor. They may not achieve Buffett-status but they stand a good chance of beating 90% of professional investors after fees, an approach that will surely lead to considerable wealth over a lifetime.

Similar to Guy, I experienced rapture when I first read the Intelligent Investor as well as Lowenstein's biography on Buffett. While I have implemented much of the teachings in my own investing strategy over the past six years, I now wish I'd been even more fanatical. For instance, Spier has set rules for himself such as always reading primary sources first, only checking stock prices once a week, never reading sell-side research and not talking about current investments. He has also worked hard to surround himself with high-quality likeminded investing peers. Well, I plan to remedy things, starting with attending the Berkshire annual meeting this year...

What's amazing about Graham, Buffett, Pabrai, Spiers, Dremen, Klarman, Watsa, Greenblatt, Gaynor, Einhorn and all the other great value investors is that they each publicly lay out their approach in detail (usually updated quarterly or annually), they each announce their specific holdings (on 13fs each quarter) and they each consistently beat the market by a wide margin and for long periods of time. Yet despite this, value investing continues to represent a small minority of the overall fund management business and few people succeed in copying value strategies successfully.

And the irony is it's such a simple approach! Invest in high-quality businesses that you understand with wide moats and good cashflow characteristics when they're going cheap. I.e. be greedy when others are fearful and fearful when others are greedy. Most investors think they understand this already.

The problem is that many cognitive biases remnant from our days on the savanna work against us at times of great fear and great greed, preventing us from sticking to methods that work over long periods of time but often appear to be broken in real time.

That's why this book is so important. Understanding our own cognitive biases and setting up an environment which will enhance rational thinking is where the rubber hits the road and what distinguishes great investors. It's no accident that Buffett holes up in Kiewit Plaza, reads sec filings all day, trades seldom and surrounds himself with individuals like Munger, Gates and Katherine Graham. He's nailed it.

Therefore, do not take this book lightly! It gets to the heart of what makes an investor great.

Great value investing and life lessons

The Education of a Value Investor by Guy Spier is a fun value investing book to read. He talks about his life, his career, and the pursuit of happiness/peacefulness. He explains how meeting and learning from Warren Buffett and Mohnish Pabrai changes his perspective on life and makes him a better investor. He candidly talk about his failures and believe those moments are where he learn the most and shapes the person he is today. The book also covers case studies of some of his investments (such as CarMax, Farmer Mac, Tupperware, etc), including the investment thesis, the outcome, and the lesson learned. His goal is no longer to be Gordon Gekko or Warren Buffet, but to be the best version of Guy Spier that he can be. :)

Here are some of my takeaways from this book:
- Authenticity and self-awareness are keys for success
- Align interest with investor (set fair compensation structure)
- Don't live beyond our means or fall into debt
- Live by your internal scorecard (have independent mind)
- Maximizing return is not everything
- True value investor is more than just about investing (It's also a way of life)
- Keep an open mind and learn from others (think what Warren would do)
- Never do anything that will taint our reputation

A new look at WW1

Most histories of the First World War have focused on the British or German perspective. This is a history of the French operations, which provided the bulk of the resistance to the Germans on the western front.

Histories of the First World War suffered from partisan books written directly after the war that gave a caricatured version of operations. They suggested that French and British generals failed to appreciate the impact of modern technology and simply used men as cannon fodder. This book is one that seeks to counter that view and show how the French commanders reacted to the success and failure of operations and developed strategies which evolved during the war to lessen the loss of human life and develop more efficient methods of attack and defence. In fact the year of 1914 saw one of the French Armies considerable triumphs the defeat of the German movement through Belgium aimed at outflanking the French line. This success occurred when the Germans devoted the majority of their army to the western front in an attempt to gain an early victory. England at the time had only mobilised a small army so the defeat of the Germans was a remarkable victory.

One of the interesting points made by the book is that some 50% of the French losses occurred in the first year of the war before the development of the trench system. The reason of course was that before the development of the trenches when there was the war of movement infantry were much more vulnerable to artillery fire. In 1915 when the French attacked again and again in an attempt to aid the Russian offensives the losses were although substantial far less than in the disastrous first year. The losses suffered in resisting the German offensive at Verdun again were again less than in 1915. It was only in 1918 that France carried out the series of attacks that finally led to Germany's capitulation that the casualty figures increased to levels close to 1915.

The book is interesting as it shows how the French developed tactics over time. The rolling barrage to protect the infantry in its advance. The notion of the flexible defence so that infantry was kept away from the front line to avoid the heavy losses which resulted from opening barrages and instead using counter attacks and the holding of key points to inflict casualties on the attacker.

In fact it is clear that the French became frustrated with the English under Haig who launched his Somme offensive without using the sorts of advances in strategy that had been developed by the French and Germans thus turning that battle into a costly stalemate. One of the attractions of the book is that it shows the history of the English campaign and issues though an observers eyes.

The book also reveals how close the Germans came to victory in 1918. If Ludendorff had been able to move more quickly to separate the English and French armies in detail he could have won. Instead he relied on costly staged offensives delayed so much that the French and English were able to hang on.

Despite the loss of the major industrial section of their country the French were able to turn their country into an arsenal producing � of the weapons that were used by the Americans. Huge numbers of tanks aircraft and heavy artillery.

The book also shows clearly the importance of the operations in Macedonian in hastening the end of the war. The attack on this front in `1918 led to Bulgaria being forced out of the war. This broke the German supply line to Turkey which meant that the British under Allenby were able to advance from Egypt easily also defeating that country. Lastly the surrender of Bulgaria opened up yet another front that the weakened Austro-Hungarian Empire could not hold. One of the more interesting books on the First World War which is valuable in giving another perspective on the conflict.

Pyrrhic victory is an important English-language addition to scholarship on France's role in the First World War. Nearly 1.5 million Frenchmen died in the war, a loss that would help end France's reign as a great power. Although France won the war--sacrificing more than any allied victor--the costs of four years of battle proved disastrous.

Pyrrhic victory is first and foremost a study of the French command's strategic goals. Doughty also discusses tactical maneuvers in some key battles. While the tactical coverage may be a little inconsistent at points, or open to debate, explanation of the evolving strategy of French leaders is first rate. There is little on the soldiers themselves, though the effects of the 1917 mutinies are discussed. Doughty relies most on official government sources and the accounts of French leadership. Those more interested in daily life in the trenches will have to look elsewhere. But anyone deeply interested in the military operations of the Great War will need to read Pyrrhic victory.

Robert Doughty has written the definitive history of France's involvment in the First World War. In the first chapter of the book, Doughty is strongly critical of Joffre for spreading out French forces and leaving them vulnerable to German attacks in the opening phases of World War I. Doughty writes that Joffre employed faulty tactics in the French offensives of 1915 by launching continuous attacks that left French forces out of range of their artillery and vulnerable to German machineguns and counterattacks. In 1916 methodical attacks with limited objectives were used in the intial Somme offensive and at Verdun. However in 1917 General Nivelle launched his failed offensive that was mainly the return of the continuous offensive tactics. But once Petain assumed command in late 1917 the French employed the methodical approach to tactics. Doughty praises General Foch's strategic sense by ordering Petain to counterattack at the Second Battle of the Marne and Soissons which stopped the German offensive in 1918. Moreover the French offensive in Salonika and the employment of French soldiers in Italy helped persuade Austria to leave the war and this left Germany diplomatically isolated. However by late 1918, Doughty concludes that the French army was exhausted and needed the help of the British and the Americans to win the war. The only weakness of this book was that Doughty largely ignored the development of the French armored and air forces, otherwise I would strongly reccommend this book about the French sacrifice in the First World War that is largely forgotten by Americans.

classic songs

"mr. magoo's christmas carol" is my favorite christmas special, and i've always enjoyed the songs. so it was fun to get this book. it's got 7 songs from the special. the product description on this page says it's for "piano/vocal/guitar", but the book itself says only "piano/vocal". there are chords listed for guitar players, but no chord diagrams or any other guitar-related info. so that's the one thing that keeps me from giving it 5 stars. i'd give it 4-1/2 if that were an option :-)

finally, a music book for Mr Magoo... Alfred publishing, "you've done it again". Fantastic easy to play arrangements, except for the one of "great to be back on broadway' which is completely wacko

Defying all odds, her son lovingly earned the name Supermanny. Holly, her husband, and their two daughters were destined to change the way people would view disabilities forever. Today, she is still able to live a fun and balanced life with her family and friends. She enjoys spending too much time at the gym, participating in mud runs, drinking wine with the wittiest name brands, and pushing the limits wherever she can!
